To say that Bill Callahan is an influence of mine is a slight understatement. Formerly performing as Smog, he crafted the lo-fi bedrock to many peoples ideas of loss, loneliness and love. Bill is playing tonight at Yugong Yishan, and the Live Beijing Music team will be there. Hope to see you there too.

Found myself killing some time in the Gulou area a few weeks back and had the pleasure of checking out Chengdu outfit The Hormones with the one and only Foukographer at Temple – a tag team if I ever saw one. The female-led dance punk outfit were on tour promoting their EP Elephant, and gotta say, they were quite impressive. Girls got chops.
It certainly helps that the band is entirely made up of women, fresh into adulthood, which adds a certain innocence and vulnerability to the dark wave that creeps into their music. And having backing vocals that isn’t some dude crooning – always a plus in my book. Check below for more and get over to Foukograper’s photoset for some red-hot photos of the band.
